MARATHON
_______________
I DECIDED TO RUN A HALF MARATHON, AS IF LIFE DIDN’T ALREADY HAVE ENOUGH CHALLENGES. WHY? IT’S A GREAT EXCUSE TO GO SOMEWHERE YOU HADN’T PLANNED ON VISITING, BUT A PLACE, CITY, OR COUNTRY YOU’D LOVE TO SEE.

Since I didn’t run in the winter, and the marathon training period falls during autumn and winter, I got myself some warm gear: mittens, something like an ear-warming hat, and a reflective vest.

Tools: Garmin Vivoactive 4, Garmin+Nike Run

I bought all my winter clothing at the Decathlon store. The headband from Van Rysel pleasantly surprised me. At first, I thought it wasn’t warm enough, but that’s not its purpose. After running a kilometer, I realized how it works: it protects your ears from the cold headwind while quickly wicking away moisture. This was my first experience with this brand. Ten out of ten.
I specifically chose a bright green Kalenji shirt because during the winter season I wanted to be more visible while running in the city. At the same time I didn’t want to buy additional gear like flashlights or reflective strips. The shirt has a very pleasant inner material (soft like kitten paws). It’s hard to say how well it breathes; I’ll need to test it on longer runs.
The Kiprun gloves are very light, with special elements on the fingers for using a mobile phone, and reflective strips. On the other hand, I feel like they might not keep my hands warm enough in colder weather. Time will tell.
I feel like I might have made a mistake buying the Pegasus 38 — they make it really hard to run slowly. Out of curiosity, I decided to run the same route under nearly identical conditions.
In the Pegasus, even after rain in the park, I broke my personal record for 5 km. Today I ran without United Colors of Benetton windbreaker and surprisingly I didn’t feel cold, even when walking after finishing the run. The KALENJI jacket performs better than I expected.
The purple shorts are more suited for the gym than for running, but they look great paired with black. I also found some socks I had bought from 4F for gym use but completely forgot about, assuming they were winter socks. Turns out, they are—but they’re actually compression socks for… skiers. With calf support, they’re perfect for running on uneven roads in the old town.
My running journey began six or seven years ago after reading Phil Knight's book ‘Shoe Dog’. Gradually, running became a habit. Then came a gym membership. After experiencing the difference that quality clothing made during workouts and how good I felt after just two runs a week, we adjusted our family budget. We reduced our monthly spending on restaurants and increased the budget for sports equipment. After that — it’s all a blur.
To be continued.
